chlorine shock treatmentChlorine protects you from the bacteria and other harmful elements in nature that can infect your pool. However, chlorine’s ability to disinfect and keep the pool clean is not permanent. The weakening of the chlorine is unavoidable, but it is still possible to save your chlorine for further use by performing a “shock treatment”, a process that will help you save your pool from a spread of bacteria.

Giving chlorine a “shock” essentially means jumpstarting the chlroine’s ability to disinfect the pool water. In order to perform the shock treatment for the chlorine on your pool, you will need a 1-lb.bag of shock granules. One pound of the shock granules will be able to handle 10,000 gallons of water. Make sure to use the appropriate amount whenever you shock your above-ground pool. Add the granules to the pool by simply pouring in the appropriate amount for your above-ground pool into the pool water, spread out evenly across the entire pool. During the shock treatment process, the chemicals (primarily calcium hypochlorite) will stimulate and reinvigorate the chlorine in the water, giving it added strength to fight any bacteria that may appear. There will be no immediate change to the appeanance of the pool water. After you have added the granules to the water, it will be safe to swim again in a matter of minutes.

It is recommended that you “shock” your pool with the treatment about once every other week in order to keep the chlorine active, present, and working: however, this might be more or less often for you depending on various other factors, like if your pool has had an improper ph level in recent days. Keep the shock treatment granules out of the reach of children. We wish you the best of luck in keeping your pool safe and free of bacteria.
